Recording the Acoustic Guitar

guitar recording studio

For the musician

Put on a new set of strings a couple of days before.

For the engineer

  • Room acoustics play a large role in the sound of the guitar, so experiment by moving the guitar around the room.

  • Mic the guitar 15 to 60 cm from the end of the fingerboard.

  • Avoid placing microphones immediately in front of the sound hole at the front, as this hole serves as a bassport that resonates at lower frequencies (80 to 100 mHz).

  • In general, placing a mic behind the bridge reduces boom and accentuates mid-range producing a clean, woody sound. Experiment, and search for the ‘sweet’ spot in this area.
