It's a no brainer to cut a frequency in one instrument and boost the same frequency in another . A slightly more subtle approach is to identify a "gap" in the frequency of one instrument and boost the second instrument in that gap.

The other commonly applied "rule is boosting or cutting in the lower register , or the high register. The most crowded and complex area of a mix , is the mid range. Tiny changes made in the region can open up what up until then has been a crowded mix.
